TRAINING IS NOT A PUNISHMENT. IT IS A PLAN.

Vedat Timuroğlu is the founder and head coach of Başarı Sports Academy. He founded the academy in Istanbul in 2007 and directs its exam-preparation and youth sport programmes; he is known as the founder of the only sports academy in Turkey with its own training camp.

THE JOURNEY

  1. The beginning

    Coming up through the field

Vedat Timuroğlu began coaching as his own competitive years ended. His early work was with amateur clubs and school teams, and that period gave him the observation the academy was later built on: most children were not quitting for lack of talent, but because their training had been badly planned.

  2. 2007

    Founding the academy

Başarı Sports Academy was founded in 2007 in a single hall with a handful of athletes. The founding idea was simple: a place that treats the exam candidate and the eight-year-old with the same seriousness. From the first years, programme design was based entirely on measurement — an approach that was not widespread in Turkey at the time.

  3. Growth

    Adding the disciplines

Over the years the academy added sports schools alongside exam preparation. From swimming to gymnastics, basketball to self-defence, the disciplines were built on one logic: develop the child’s general movement skill first, and let the discipline come second. Today the academy runs thirteen separate programmes.

  4. The camp

    A first in Turkey

The academy’s turning point was building its own training camp. Depending on rented facilities imposed a real constraint, particularly on exam simulations. In its own centre the academy can build courses at true dimensions and plan camp periods at whatever intensity it chooses. This is what makes it the only sports academy in Turkey with its own camp.

The worst thing you can do to an athlete is ask for something they are not ready for. The second worst is not asking once they are.

TRAINING PRINCIPLES

  • No programme without measurement

A programme cannot be written without knowing where the athlete stands. Every athlete starts with measurement: speed, jump, endurance and movement quality are recorded. Two athletes preparing for the same target do not get the same programme.

  • Do not break the order

Movement quality precedes strength, strength precedes speed, conditioning precedes course work. Weeks gained by skipping that order are repaid with interest in injury. The athlete who rushes is the athlete who arrives late.

  • Fatigue is not progress

A session is not judged by how tired it left the athlete. Recovery is as much part of the programme as loading; sleep and nutrition sit inside the training log, not outside it.

  • The athlete must learn to decide

The goal is not an athlete who executes the coach’s instructions faithfully, but one who can read their own body. That is why we share measurement results with athletes — someone who knows what they are doing and why will still do the right thing when the coach is not there.
